Should I Buy A Impreza P1

My Bro and I have been offered a P1 from Ian Grieve Subaru in Falkirk just recently for £9995. It has 60k miles on it and is in mint condition. I don't know whether to let my heart or my head win as this one is still on the original engine and they all seem to go Pop at around this mileage. spoke to RA Motorsport, who confirmed this is what happens to the P1 engine at this mileage but a AF remap would help. Please let me know ur opinion on these cars or ur experience owning one because my opinion of the matter is that when its cherry has popped it won't be an original classic no more and therefore not have any monetary value. but i do love it

Show Us Your Geo's

I have decided to get the blob onto the 4 wheel geo set up machine thingy at Bitz in Nairn to maximise what we've got or not as the case may be.
Other than a whiteline rear arb and droplinks with -1 degree front camber we're running standard suspension (2005 WRX) and settings. Have been toying with various options including
lower springs, sorry to mess Phil and Dave around but decided against this due to:
1. after much phoning around Andy at RA Motorsport and a decent andy in Subaru parts Perth advised me prodrive springs off a GB270 Hawkeye
should fit my blob though rates are unknown and they do eat shocks.
2. seems to be a strong opinion that Impreza's dont like being lowered and easy to mess handling up (this is only an opinion all you guys on coilovers etc)

So... having decided to forego the lower springs I'm now looking at ALK, possible camber bolts and free caster mods and wondering what everyone else is running as far as geo set up goes?

Probably going to try following setting to start unless this tread kicks up other ideas. I may well get a shock to find what current settings are!

FRONT
camber -1.5 to -1.75
caster max available
toe probably slight in though not yet decided

REAR
camber -1.0 if I can get this on standard kit
toe zero

could be very interesting/informative to see what everyone is running at assuming you are prepared to share (no trade secrets)
all constructive comments/advise most welcome.

Insurance Advice

Hi All,

I'm a lil new to this but here goes.... I have a problem/confusion re the insurance of my car, and hope someboday might be able to shed some light.... My problem is-

My car, (A full spec Japanese light weight Subaru Impreza,) was hit from behind while park outside my house. The people have admitted liability to their insuranse company (Tesco). Tesco have contacted me today, and told me that want to take my car away and repair. I told them I have received 3 independent quotations for the repair work, but they have told me No, and the repairs must be done by an Tesco approved repair centre.

I explained to them the car was a specialist vehicle, with ultra light weight bumpers that need to be imported from Japan, However they refuse to agree to supply and fit the original specification bumpers.

I thought that you could take your car to a repair centre of your choice, especially as the accident was not my fault.

There reason for my urgent post on here, Is that they have insisted that somebody will be coming this evening to take my car away and drop off a ford fiesta.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Regards,

Alternator Voltage

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the voltage should be through a running alternator on a 2003 WRX loaded and unloaded?.

I have an engine light on, and have been told by a "Specialist" that this was the problem due to under charging. I bought a second hand unit, with exactly the same serial number and from the same age of car, and it seems to give LESS charge than the alleged suspect item . And just to throw insult in the engine light has appeared again, and the sh$te code reader i bought off fleabay won't tell me the code, all it does is remove the light for a short period.

Seems i bought a lemon, maybe the classic will be staying after all!.
Lightweight alloy ECU cage. I used this to get rid of the heavy standard ECU mount and foot rest. I had it mounted on the passengers side transmission tunnel and had a Power FC fitted but will fit all classic standard ECU's and I assume newage. It has holes at the back to allow the plugs to be fitted and holes in the side to allow the com port to be accessed.

Kames 2012 - Track day No2

SIDC revisits Kames on Saturday 23rd June for the second sprint track event this year

For those who've not seen the previous thread......
Kames is a short sprint circuit and cars run one at a time for four laps (out, 2 flyers and an in). We also run in either direction, the choice is yours! Kames is much easier on your car than a full race circuit and the pace is decided by you. For any info related to Kames please visit the EACC website.

The event is open to drivers of all makes and models of car. There is no charge for passengers (front seat only). The event is open to both SIDC members and non-members (by purchasing the correct slot(s)). Please supply full details of your car when booking (make/model/registration number & colour). PLEASE NOTE - ALL DRIVERS REQUIRE TO JOIN EACC FOR INSURANCE COMPLIANCE PURPOSES - £20 PAYABLE ON THE DAY (ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP) - this isn't charged again on any subsequent visits in 2012

Drivers should arrive at the circuit no later than 9am (for AM bookings and all day bookings) or 1pm (for PM only bookings) for registration and mandatory drivers briefing. If you wish to run all day, please be sure to buy both an AM and PM slot.

Some conditions apply: car must be to a good, safe standard and no fluid leaks. Helmets and belts to be worn on track, you may carry one passenger when on track (helmeted). Driver must be a member of EACC as above. There will be a morning and afternoon session with a short break for lunch. The first session is 930am until 1pm, the second being 130pm until 5pm.

There has been a cafe open at Kames in previous years - at this time it is uncertain if it will be open in 2012. The EACC is still deciding the fate of the cafe and as soon as we know the decision we will update this thread.

Having successfully ran these track days over the last few years, we have learnt what works best for you and have tweaked the format accordingly. There are a limited number of slots AM/PM to allow fair running time to the participants, you can have either or both if you prefer! Cost is £17.50 per session for SIDC members and £22.50 non-members. Don't delay folks, get your tickets before they all go. They will be available in the SIDC shop from today: Click me here

Please add your name to the list - as payments are made the list will be updated, only your payment will secure your place on the list, so don't hang about - when they are gone, they are gone

Feel free to discuss the event in this thread, any questions then just ask.

See you all at Kames
Additional info has come to light since SIDC booked the venue. The main one being that the onsite cafe will be open for us. The other is that Kames has now introduced a 105db noise limit. No details as to how they'll test that, or if they will, but we'll let you know when we find out.

JAE Tunnel Run 2012 - Friday 7th September
In association with missbanzai

For the 2nd time the teams at MissBanzai and JAE are collaborating to bring you the JAE Tunnel Run 2012

This year we will be starting from Wicksteed Park on the evening of Friday 7th September.

The MissBanzai team will be waiting to collect your entrance fee at the field closest to the entrance at 10pm.

Entrance fee is £10 per car - £8 of this fee will be given to Macmillan cancer care, this is all helping to go towards money being raised all weekend at JAE.
£2 is to cover admin and printing costs.

At approx 11pm when all the maps are handed out, we will be off to see the sights and tunnels of London.
These will include The London Eye, Tower of London, Tower bridge and Big Ben… we will be doing some epic tunnels which include The Kingsway tunnel and the favourite West Ferry underpass to name but a few.

So if you have heard of our infamous tunnel runs, but have never done one or you are a hard core tunnel runner and know what these are all about, get yourself, and your friends involved to help us raise as much money as possible for this very worthy charity.

There will be a prize for Spirit of the Tunnel Run on the night, which will go to the car/team who have embraced tunnel running to the max!

Details below:

Starting point: Entrance field at Wicksteed Park
Gates open: 9pm
Price: £10 per car – Route map will be handed out on entry
Gates close for entry: 10:30pm

The Sidc Rebrand

In January the Committee announced the club would be rebranding and changing the name to Subaru International Drivers Club - still to be known as the "SIDC". As well as changing the name, it was decided that we would take the opportunity to renew the design of the club's image, show equipment, merchandise, website, forums, True Grip and shop etc.
It was agreed that the rebrand would be affective from the 1st May 2012 but advised there would be a transition period in dealing with everything.
The artwork hasn't been put together yet but each panel and leg are fully brandable.
We are looking to have the club, its merchandise and promotional material fully updated by the end of the year at the latest. No more equipment will be purchased under the old branding.
Our plan for the existing equipment is to, when finances permit, to have new canopies added to the pop up gazebos and additional banners/flags to allow more events being covered that occur on the same day.

In relation to merchandise, we are in the process of ordering new club car stickers which all paid members will receive two of once they arrive, as well as this, upon renewal you'll receive a new style tax disc holder and branded membership cards.
Clothing will be next on our list of merchandise options. I can already see that many of you are showing interest in this so we'll try not to keep you waiting too long.

Regional Organisers will each receive a SIDC Promotional Pack that will consist of Business Cards, Flyers and Membership Forms.

Throughout the show season we'll create various posters advising members of things happening within the club, below are examples of two that were used at Japfest last weekend:

Number of downloads: 33
Charity Poster.pdf (133.31K)
Number of downloads: 22

I mentioned above that True Grip will also be rebranding, this will be rolled out in the next week or so after we had been waiting on clearance on publishing an article that the club were lucky enough to get an early scoop on. Keep an eye out for this being published.

The website, forum and shop changes are still on the cards. We are now in the process of appointing a database specialist who will transfer the existing data over to the new Content Management System for us to begin testing on and tweaking to our needs. We'll update you further on this again soon.

Just had an invitation for the SIDC to attend the local Rrrrallye event in Keith this year again! I missed this one last year sadly but will hopefully be there this year!

For anyone who doesn't know the event This is the main local event which raises money to fund Skid Car vouchers and young driver days at Alford for local young drivers to improve their driving skill.

<del class='bbc'>Although I'm not officaily a SIDC R/O</del>, (Ed: Damn! it seem I am now...) we have attended this event the last few years since it began and would like to continue with a good show of cars and help promote the club in good light! If there are new flyers and stuff avaialble I'll look into getting some for the event and depending on numbers also try get marquee thingy again if space allows

The main objective of the show is to get young drivers to come along a have a fun day but also to let them see what can happen when things go wrong

The show is being held in the grounds of the Keith community centre & Keith Grammar School on the Banff road out of Keith (very easy to find) on Sunday 17th June 10am till 4pm

Thes main location is moving closer to the Community Center building due to a new school being built so don't know exact details of layout yet but will keep thing updated here where I can.

Subaru Running Costs

Well since this place is soon to be turning into an all world subaru club, figured I'd ask a sensible all Subaru question!

Looks like the Ka has finally going to have to be given up and need something to replace it with.. Not sure what route to go down at the moment, either try and find something cheap again or get somethign a bit better but ruggid enough to withstand going up and down a rought gravel road every day to work (Current Impreza sits too low and grounds )

Anyone have any real world experience with the difference in running costs between a Impreza WRX, Impreza sport and a forester (non-turbo)? Just one line of options I'm considering, like the forester idea but not sure the running costs will be much different from the WRX.. ideally I'd go for a Diesel Forester, but the suckers are keeping their value too much Grrr!

Looking for sort of Tax/Insurance/MPG sort of costs from real peopel not just benchmark promo guidline costs that are rarely accurate...

Cheers!

P.s. Also open to any suggestions/reccomendations others may have.. Note: On a low budget

Will I Ever Get My Car Back....

1st show of the season coming up & still no car... Scooby clinic have had my pride & joy 10wks now with no end in site.... The whole experience has put me off that much I'm border line selling it... It's an absolutely prisine & pampered Hawkeye Sti type uk & I stashed it its heated garage October last year all polished up etc & I've taken it to the clinic end of Feb for a fully forged engine & big turbo etc because the 340bhp it had wasn't quite enough... & 10wks later it's still not done & the cars bin outside in snow rain & god knows what rusting away driving me nutts... Don't think I'm gonna be using them again but who else can I trust? & I'm gonna have to borrow the wife's bug eye to goto Modified Live on Sataday witch has cheered me up not... They've assured me it's only gonna be a couple more weeks but 3months for a forged engine can't be right can it? We have 3scooby's & have used Scooby Clinic for everything for the last 6years & think this is the last time there gonna let me down.. Sorry to rant, but had to get that of my chest...

Hi guys,
I have decided to upgrade my turbo and want to know what to go for?
I have bought equal length manifold/headers and up-pipe, a de-cat down pipe, and fitted a front mount intercooler. While all the old pipes are off the car i thought i may as well upgrade the turbo.
Really i am after acceleration as i will be using the car for sprints and hillclimbing.
I really don't know much about turbochargers so any info will be a great help.
Thanks,

Knockhill Courses

I'm booked on a 1 hour performance driving course at Knockhill next week and hope some folk can give some pointers.

Where is the nearest Shell garage with V-Power to Knockhill?
Will obviously check oil and coolant levels in the car - but anything else I should check?
Will need to clean it and make sure there's nothing flying about inside.
How should I care for my engine and brakes best doing 10 laps of Knockhill at a time?
Should I take it easy and preserve my pride and joy - or is "spirited" driving ok?
Is a more or less standard STi built to handle me taking it on a track - even for just 2 x 10 lap runs?
What's a respectable lap time? lol

I've also booked onto the Rally Experience in their Impreza Turbo - really looking forward to that.
